Thanked: 7I think I will be the lucky one, who will shave first with the size 2 Kanetake. The pair (the left and the right) should be on their way to me. If oldschool confirms, the pictures on his site are my knifes.
It still may take a few days, but if I used them, I will report. In my opinion it is not possible to shave myself just using the omote side, thats why I ordered a left and right hand version.
Hope they arrive soon, without any custom difficulties...

Thanked: 7I already got one japanese razor (called Harima Fuji), but I don´t see any chance to shave with and across the grain all spots in my face with just one side of a japanese razor, I always had to use both sides, omote and ura (Which, by the way, works very well). Maybe I´m doing something wrong, but with a left and a right hand it should work anyway.
If they are at the customs there are two possibities, first they let them through without any fee at all, or I will be informed with a postcard, (which may take an additional day or two) that I can fetch them and I will have to pay an additonal 20%. So latest monday I should now.
Its very hard to wait each additional day, I can´t expect, to hold them in my hands and finally to use them. I will let you know!
Thanks again to oldschool for the smooth transaction!

Dullblade
i have the same problem.
If you look at JimR video on youtube (kamisori shaving on youtube) he may help a bit.
The trick is to shave with horizontal passes for the side burns (especially the "opposite" side, the one that is hard to shave with the Omote). After the sideburns are made, it's a lot more easy to go with vertical passes for the rest of the face.
To make is clearer (i hope) i am a right handed, so i shave my right sideburn with vertical passes (omote easily flat on the skin). And i shave my left sideburn with horizontal passes, because i couldn't handle a vertical pass there.
I also use the Ura side without feeling guilty, but the less i could : for the idea of tradition and because the design/function of the blade. Japanese bevel are asymetric, and typically the Omote is to be facing the body, the Ura facing exterior. It's why i try to keep the Omote on the skin, it was meant that way. Now is it right or wrong to keep doing so ? Most of blades are to be use "against" someone, even in the case of a barber. But we now are using it against ourself.
There is that video (damn, i can't find it out) of that guy going for a japanese shaving. The video is very long cuz he goes through all the deal : shampoo, haircut, and after, finally, the shave. 40 minutes overall, shaving starting at more that 20 min i think.
But what is nice to see is the barber shaving. And he is using the blade almost like a paintbrush. What i mean is that he is constantly readapting his grip, using almost only the omote, but not only.
Now i'm writting this and i doubt of myself, wish i could find it again. But what i am sure is that he was doing a lot of "touch-up" during his shave : going for here to there and coming back, he was like a butterfly on his face so i am sure he used the ura side.
What is sure is that we are hacking the kamisori, so there is no correct way to do, we are reinventing.
Having two Kanetake of different side is a solution i haven't thought about. But know i am considering it i wish i had the idea, and the cash !!!!!

Thanked: 326What size is your Harima Fuji and how long have you had it before deciding on Norikazu's Kanetake?
I never had any problems shaving with any Japanese straights. Why people have trouble with them is beyond me considering I'm a lefty and use my right. I reckon everyone's different in that regard not to mention each has different learning curve.
Months ago just for kicks, I once used the Ura to shave ATG on my right upper lip. It punished me and I deserved every bit. From then on, I didn't try any stroke I wasn't familiar with. In this case I shaved with the wrong side after already having done so successfully with the Omote.

Thanked: 326
Just a note, the barber indeed uses ura to touch up forehead in conjunction with omote.
