Thanks Jim and others for checking in. I got a call right after it happened from a friend who works the weather station at the university. First thing I thought of doing was emailing to see if all was good, but decided you would be busy enough.
My friend informed me that a lot of the US media is blowing the effects it will have on US soil out of proportion. All I can say is that I hope he's right.
Stay safe.

I want to thank everyone for checking in. My family and I are very safe, far from the effects of both quake and tsunami, and I have heard from ZethLent as well. He had some minor damage but everything appears to be ok.
Right now, I'm in the same boat as most of you: just watching the news and hoping the worst is over.
For those who have the means, I would like to recommend a small donation to the RedCross. Japan is in far better shape to handle a disaster like this than some countries, but thousands of people have lost everything and they can still use all the help they can get.

We are all fine here. Some Family up north have yet to be contacted. I can't even guess as to how many more times it has shook since the initial 8.9M one. I kept getting woken up last night by the earth grumbling and then the house would shake to varying degrees and then I would go back to sleep only to be woken up again by another one. I walked 15km of the 40km home last night (3.5 hours) before my sister in law was able to pick me up and drive me the rest of the way. Here's hoping we are infor a quiet period for the next while.

This appears to be one monster of an earthquake. It is reported that the cooling systems on some of the nuclear reactors in the quake area have failed.
I don't think Japan has been devastated by an earthquake this bad since the 1920s.
