Looks like a Ulu blade. Ulu knives were used for skinning, but they work well in the kitchen. No clue if that is what it is or not. Clean it up and put it to work. Sorry to say, but in the end mom will find some way to claim it and call it her own unless you can hurry up and make one and even then there is no guarantee that it won't end up in her possession.
