Thread: Finished Keridashi for leatherwork!

Hey all!

Just finished making this keridashi from O1 steel.

its heat treated in water then parkerized (many know it as gun blueing) and honed!

yes it is 'shave ready' although that point may bite a bit.

In the words of Lloyd Christmas "I like it a lot!"

Why water?

hey bruno, I quenched in water because to my understanding it gives a harder edge but is highly likely of cracking the blade is most cases. However because this blade has a super hefty edge geometry I figured it wouldn't crack, and luckily I was right!

I have a novice question about the blade. What separates this blade from a skiving knife?
I have a small skiving knife that looks really similar.

good catch RezDog, they are basically the same! the only difference is the country of origin for the style, the above has no wooden scales and is more traditional Japanese style whereas skiving knives are a western term.

But you are correct for all intensive purposes they are the same

I have one I bought from a custom boot maker in Texas. It works quite well for thinning my lap edges when I do leather bound boxes. That makes all the difference in the world when it comes to fit and finish.
