Damascus kitchen knife with Narwhale handle
Most of what I do is razors, but from time to time I like making some high end kitchen knives.
This is one that I finished just yesterday, and which I think is the most beuatiful knife I've ever made.
The steel is a damascus I made myself with a LOT of intermediate steps and manipulations Basically I turned 3 pounds of steel into a half pound blade blank. The handle is Narwhal tusk which is the most beautiful handle material I've ever used.

Thanked: 556Gorgeous! Looks like a classic Japanese style.
The handle is spectacular. How do you source a material like narwhale tusk?David

Thanked: 154Hot damn that's beautiful O_o
Beautiful is important, but when all is said and done, you will always be faithful to a good shaver while a bad one may detter you from ever trying again. Judge with your skin, not your eyes.

I know a guy...
No, seriously. I know a guy. The owner of MermaidSupplies is a personal friend of mine. He specializes in natural handle material that is high end. Narwhal, walrus, mammoth, fossil seacow, oosik, ...
Usually I see him at the Gembloux knife show and I pick up everything I want to buy to get a detailed feel. It goes beyond simple measurements. I want to get an understanding of what exactly I want to do with it because material like this costs a lot.
I used to think mammoth was expensive. Now I think mammoth is cheap. Narwhal is hideously expensive.
My friend sources his material from inuit which is the only way to get it legit.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

You should see my storage cupboard. There's meteorite, Tamahagane from various smelters incl. Wayne Portratz, Wootz from Ric Furrer and Alfred Pendray, Damascus from a bunch of people, whole ingots, fossil bones, mammoth bark, narwhal, walrus, oosik, .... Damascus is less important because I make it myself these days.
The things I make are expensive, and some people think this is a money grab. But when you want to work with high end stuff, you need to pick it up when you can get it, because many things come along only once.
My stock counts as assets, so in my books they don't count as expense until I decide to use them. But in a real world sense, I've been in a financial hole for many years, and will probably not even break even for many years to come.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.
