Thread: fixed blades?

With this new hobby of mine, my interests in sharp things have been perked.

I've always had a every day carrier kershaw. But now I'm thinking about getting a fixed blade knife.
Do you have any suggestions.
I kind of want 2. One a large knife, like an 8 inch blade, something to use as a tool while backpacking.
The other I want as one that can function as a EDC. So it needs to be light weight, and tough.

I just ordered the Hunter Scalpel from AG russel. It hasn't arrived yet but it's a fixed that I'll be using as an EDC.

2.5 inch blade and in wonderfull AUS-10 steel.

They have larger versions of it as well.

If you're not in a hurry....I could make you something as well. But that'll take a lot of time.

What did you want the new blade to do? Being a bit of a knife knut (in some directions) I find myself looking at to many variables when asked "what 8" fixed blade?" I'm sure I'm over analizing the question and I'm sorry for that.

I have probably a dozen knives that fit that question and they all have different uses

I prefer fix'd blades over folders anyway, had to many folders fail to ever trust one again...

Also, you might want to add a few criteria. Such as price and what you're going to be using it for. That might help narrow it down to a few good suggestions.

Under 200 bucks for either one.

The larger one, would be something I'd take camping, hunting, fishing (not for cleaning fish), (I don't want a fillet knive) I've actually have a "rambo" style bowie knife with a hollow handle that I can stick stuff in. I like it, except it is 440 stainless, so it doesn't hold an edge at all (it was a 10 dollar gag gift). It would be ideal if it was good steel. If it floats that would be awesome.

I'm kind of open to whatever on the smaller one. 2 or 3 inch blade. It just seems like anything I ever see is an ornamental knife. I want something I can abuse, not feel bad about breaking, but is quality made...

Just a small correction. Since it says 440 stainless it's probably 440a stainless. And yes, that's a cheap steel.

440b and c however are pretty decent. 440c being the best edge holder.

For $200 I'd say contact a custom maker. Butch Harner is on this forum and might be able to do something for you. Otherwise head on over to bladeforums.com and have a look over there.

I did not know the difference between 440a and b or c thanks for the info.

So can get a great knife for much less than that?

For the bigger knife, I suggest a RD7 or RD9. They are now made by Ontario Knife Co. For a blade that size, forget stainless steel and stay with Carbon.



RD7 is 82 and RD0 about 100. I strongly suggest this seller:

For the smaller, check the same website for Ontario RAT-3. The D2 model is getting discontinued.

Do not get confused, Ranger knives and RAT are not the same. Both are great though. Ontario used to make the RAT, but now RAT are made by ROWEN. Ranger knives are made by Ontario since last year.

Or if you want a really small knife, check Bark River PSK.

(for the records, I own a RAT3 in D2, a RD6 and a PSK, so I recommend stuff I know is tough)
