I have put such indents, of lesser degree, on a couple of my survival knives to bite firesteel.
One reason for that is also that it allows you to sharpen it properly. Without that, you'd have a part of edge near the bolster where your sharpening stone would not reach properly and you'd end up with a really ugly (and dysfunctional) edge. It doesn't have to be that big, but you need to have a separation between the edge and the bolster or guard for edge maintenance reasons.

I've posted mine before.....bought almost 7 years or so ago. It was part of a special series they were doing and was designed by a Cajun fella(name escapes me). The curve in the blade and drop point was specifically designed for hacking and game skinning . Love my KA-BAR.Name: 001.jpg

aaaah! I see that this is revived 2 year old thread, but it brings up another of my acquisition disorders...KAD. I have one of a lot of brands although most are folders. I have several Cold steel (including a kitchen knife set) and find them to be strong and sharp, although they are beautiful. My favorite for EDC is a Benchmade McHenry and Williams 710 folder. I also have Bokers, Bucks and several other well known brands.

    Like said above, Ka-Bars.
My father has this USN Ka-Bar from the WWII era(not sure on exact date) but the sleek look, the shape, and the balance of the knife is just.. wonderful.
