Thanked: 0Hi Y'all from Atlanta, GA
I've been wanting to learn the skill and practice of straight razor shaving for years and finally took my first step today. I am down to my last good mach3 cartridge and so I decided to see if I could find them cheaper online. it was only a minute or two before I was seeing ads and sites related to straight razors and I was reminded of my long time interest.
I ended up trying to go an inexpensive route and spent some time on Ebay. I almost plunked down money on Kriegar and Gold Dollar but searched this site first and got some good heads up info first. I decided I would take my chances on looking for a good vintage blade, one with the right kind of steel and ended up finding a Kropp at a total price of 16 dollars. The blade appears to retain a shiny finish with one or two spots of minor pitting, and the edge looks consistent and even. The scales are damaged (hence the price) but I am hopeful that is only cosmetic. I am excited to be getting it in the mail in the next few weeks and once I have concluded I will be able to use it I will be on the lookout for the strop and accessories I will need.
Cheers Y'all!!Last edited by Johnster; 08-23-2013 at 01:41 AM.

Welcome to the 'Place'
I'd say that damage is more than cosmetic. I'd advise new scales & a hone but I'd be glad to be wrong.
btw Kropps are great razors. The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

Thanked: 2209Welcome to SRP
Good advice so far. That razor will definitely need to be honed so look in the Classified Ads section here and send it out to a pro. Your face will thank you.

Welcome to the addiction. Scales can be made if you have the tools and time/skill. I have made a few and its fun. They can also be purchased from several places for a minimal amount of money depending on what you are looking for. I 2nd the suggestion to get it honed. You will also need a strop to use before every shave. Lots of stuff in the classifieds and I am sure any questions you have will be answered here.

Welcome. I am not on the list of Atlanta members, but I am in Lilburn.
Yes you need to have it honed and you will need a strop before you use it.

Welcome to SRP! I'm in Powder Springs, here (about 30 mins. NW of Atlanta).
I'd definitely send that baby out to be honed and rescaled if you don't feel comfortable or aren't able to make the scales. On the honing front, I'd definitely send it out.
For a strop, I'd recommend getting one from Straight Razor Designs... you will most likely cut your first one to pieces, but the components are replaceable and the strops themselves are super high quality.
On a side note, I'm trying to work out a meet up with all the folks around Atlanta (though without much success), so be on the lookout for that. If we can get enough folks together to have one, you should come... you'll learn more in an hour than DAYS on here.

Welcome to SRP! So far a lot of good advice. Looks like a project to me. Shouldn't be to hard to get that one shave ready and usable. I too am from Powder Springs. For me, the first straight I obtained and brought back to life, is still in my rotation and used often. Take time and enjoy your shaves!

Thanked: 0Thanks Guys, I am still very much in acquisition phase right now and as I was reading I got the picture that a) the strop is one of the basic essentials and b) I shouldnt get too attached to my first one.
Though its still in the mail, I was thinking of sending it to the guys at whippeddog.com for the honing and some new scales when I do receive it. Anyone have any input on that? ThanksLast edited by Johnster; 08-25-2013 at 10:55 PM.

Learn to strop on a single sheet of newspaper shaped like a strop & your first strop might last for decades.
The scales & honing are easy jobs that any competent restorer can do. Shouldn't matter who you choose, just that you get it done. Last thing you want is that scale to let go when stropping or shaving. You may even have someone close by to you in the classifieds..
