Welcome! As you can see, I also live in AL. I saw your other post with the razor you bought in Birmingham; looks interesting. I might also suggest that you buy a second razor, perhaps from the classifieds here. Having one with a more standard/traditional shape and dimensions that is also certainly shave ready might give you a different perspective; of course, this might also confirm that your first one is a great shaver but you won't really know for sure until try out another one. Also, it is generally recommended to have two SR's when starting out so that you have a backup in case something happens to your first one (drop it, chip it on the faucet, etc) and so that you have something to use when the other one needs to be sent out for honing; it's also good to have one that you shave with regularly and another that you keep on reserve for times when you think your primary may be getting dull- it will remind you of what shave ready feels like and help you decide if the primary needs to be honed.

If you don't already have a strop, brush, and soap/cream you should get those ASAP. You can surf around the forums for suggestions as to what/where to buy; or, you can just ask here. Be sure to do some reading in the beginner's section of the wiki (library) too. Happy shaving and Roll Tide!

I plan on buying a brush and soap this afternoon. I am a bit of a knife buff so I already have a strop.

Not sure where you were planning to buy the brush and soap from, but you can pick up a Van der Hagen brush/soap/bowl combo at walmart, walgreens, CVS, etc. It's a pretty good setup to start out with; I've since upgraded to a badger brush, but I still use the VDH brush for travel. In fact, I'm thinking about trying that brush with a couple of harder soaps that I have because it has more backbone than the badgers. I would be interested to know if you come across any other shaving supplies in Bham as well.
