New member in Canada
Hi everyone!
Another new member here, from Canada.
I only caught the straight razor bug a few weeks ago when I read someone's forum post about razors on another site. SInce then I've been reading and watching a lot of videos.
Haven't bought a razor yet, but just last night I found what looks like a good deal on a used razor. I wonder if you cna tell me if it's a good deal, or if I should keep looking.
Here's what's advertised:
Dovo Solingen "Best Quality" 5/8 Straight Razor + Dorko strop $130
I e-mailed the guy, and asked about the condition, age, etc. He said it's in great shape, not too old, he had it professionally honed, and its been treated with mineral oils after each use. Said he's selling it because he uses another razor more often.
Think it's a decent deal for a newb?
Thanks in advance!

Not a bad price, but buyer beware when it comes to the term "shave ready". You can get the same package @ Straight Razor Designs for a couple of hundred, BUT, it comes guaranteed sharp and with a certificate for a free rehoning. Welcome to SRP.

Hi Svengali, and welcome to SRP! Congrats on (almost) taking the plunge.
As has been said, it's really impossible to judge a razor without pics, and even then it can be tricky. To complicate matters, valuations aren't allowed on SRP, so you probably won't have anyone tell you that yes, it is worth $X.00.
That having been said, if you can post pics, we might be able to advise as to whether there are any obvious flaws that should be a deal-breaker.
Whereabouts are you located? There may be someone local who can help you out first-hand.
Good luck!
EDIT: just to give you some context, check out this set from Classic Edge. BTW Classic Edge is one of the vendors that you can trust will get your blade truly shave-ready. Dovo Straight Razor Starter Set!Last edited by Cangooner; 11-05-2013 at 03:32 AM.
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

Welcome aboard
Cangooner pointed out a great link for you,
one advantage to that is you are getting items of known quality so it lessens the variables as you start out.
But there is definitely more than one way to skin a cat.
EnjoyIt is just Whisker Whacking
Relax and Enjoy!
