    Default Hello All!

I want to admit I stalked the forums on this site for quite some time before I decided I might want an account. I am completely new to the world of straight shaving, and would love to hear anything you guys have to offer on the subject. I always like a challenge and I understand that straight shaving takes a lot of skill and practice. Learning a skill that less and less people know each year really appeals to me. I also don't mind the idea of saving 20 bucks a month in cartridges.

I recently purchased a Ralf Aust 5/8 blade from SRD because I really wanted a new blade to start. Also, I wanted a blade that was honed shave ready from whom everyone on this site considers one of the masters of the craft. I feel knowing what that feels like on my face will help me to understand the sharpness I should strive for when I start honing my own razors down the road.

Thanks for reading, and I hope I get to know you all well!

Sounds like you are off to a great start. SRD has a great reputation for shave ready blades. I am sure you have seen this before, but spend time in the Library/Wiki and make sure and check out the Beginners section. Lots of great advice. Have you obtained a strop, brush and soap yet?
The older I get the more I realize how little I actually know.

Enjoy the journey it's well worth the time you put in after things come together, and it's a a reward each morning there after. You started with a great blade that i'm sure you will enjoy for years and years and years and years if you take good care of it.

Now now Ed, it isn't a competition, but if it was you would be coming second, which isn't all that bad really...until you realise it's a two horse race

Hi and welcome. The Ralf Aust is a nice blade and the only new one I have. Lynn does a great job of honing so you know it's not the razor. Good luck with the shaves. Technically Ed and Mick usually your both behind me but Im on holidays and sleeping in

Thanks for all the encouragement it really makes me feel at home. The one question I do have is what is the difference between a 150 dollar brush and a cheap one? I see that there is such a wide price range out there, and I can't really justify spending a lot on just a brush.
