Hi yal! New to the world of straight razor shaving. Lots of wisdom on SRP and haved learned much in a short time. I have been shaving with my greatgrandpaws straight razor (Shumate) for about a month now that i honed and stroped myself, not bragging, just proud i was able to accomplish it. Passes the HHT easy thanks to the SRP wisdom and knowledge. I'm still a beginner and have not cut myself yet! Now i might be bragging. I do have a honing question: Is it ok to lap my norton 8000 with my dmt 4000? Hope so because thats what i did. Any words of wisdom? Thanks! P.S. Mr. Lynn, thank you for all you do here God Bless!

Welcome to SRP! I wonder what kind of car you drive?

As for your question: you can even lap the Norton 4K/8K with a DMT 325, the latter being one of the most used lapping stones on this forum.
Any words of wisdom? If it shaves well, it must be a good thing you did. That goes for just about anything.

Hi Mustang. Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you have a very good start on this journey. Not many are as fortunate.

Let us know where you live. More than likely an experienced person will be nearby to give some hands-on if needed.

Wow! That is no short order! You have done exceptionally well IMO. Honing your own razor to the point of shave readiness and shaving with it. That's impressive. Keep up the great work!
What a curse be a dull razor; what a prideful comfort a sharp one

Hi and welcome. Congrats on the success so far. Using the DMT on the 8k might pull the diamonds from the plate. That is why the 325 is so popular as it is a good grit for lapping without damaging it. Good luck and any questions feel free to ask. Ed

You could be right cause I know the dmt4000 feels a little smoother now, but you should see that norton 8000 shine. No paste needed just strop and shave. I practiced on a gold dollar to learn how razor metal works first. This metal ain't like the old metal in grandpaws shumate, not talking a gd down because the gd is a good razor too, it just polishes up a little different for me. Not sure but the gd may be easy to over hone. Thanks for the reply. I think I'd better look in to a dmt 325. Happy shaving guys and gals!

All DMTs have a break-in period, where the diamonds sticking out are knocked off. Even a DMT 325 will feel pretty smooth when broken in.

Practising on a GD is a good idea, though they are not always easy to hone. I've never overhoned, as far as I know, so I cannot tell you about that. The pyramid method is designed to prevent overhoning, you could search the wiki for it

    Welcome!

Your granddad had good tastes in razors! I hope it runs in the family!

Congratulations on your honing so far! Honing can be easy but often it isn’t! You may also find that as time goes by you may want to exchange a blade for honing by a more experienced honer.

In fact I've asked a highly respected Professional Honer to hone a razor for me using the exact same setup that I use so that I could compare how I was doing (I was holding my own) I’ve done this often with pinklather and it’s always been an informative exchange as we use different hones!

As mentioned the DMT 325 is recommended for lapping. While I never had problems using mine right out of the box some have and it ‘may’ be advisable to run an old chisel or some kind of steel over it before use to dislodge any diamonds that may be loose!

You will find that DMT 325 is a real workhorse! If it seems to not be working up to snuff for you, try using a hard bristled plastic brush and some powdered cleaner such as Comet or Ajax and scrub it well.

You are correct in that GD’s do not have the same quality of steel as most razors from days gone by! Since they are cheap and nothing special they can be useful for trying different ways of altering a blade/such as making it shoulderless!

OH! I don't use any pasted strops! I do use a 12K now but I worked until I found that I got a great shave off of the Norton 8K each and every time before I purchased a Naniwa 12K.

Enjoy the ride! It’s a long strange trip but the journey is well worth the walk!

PS Please add your location as others may be right down the street!
Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdin’s cave of 'stuff'.
