Interesting problem having a good argument. So few do it well and with civility, one of the nicest features of SRP is how civil the forums are in general. I run a larger neighborhood list server with over 500 families on it, and of course we all see each other regularly. Still there is something about a computer screen. People will type things they would never say in person. So we finally decided no sex, politics, business solicitation, or religion discussed on the list server. It has been working for 14 years.
As an engineer we are trained in formal logic, we use scientific method, and we tend to build our arguments brick by brick on supporting facts. If we come to a point where state of the art ends, we offer opinion but will declare this up front. While there is no hard data, my informed opinion from experience leads me to suggest the following best guess...
As a young man I took a fascinating human relationship model course, and I was stunned to learn other people use entirely different basis for argument. Some people have a political agenda and will manipulate the facts and message to achieve their political ends. Other people routinely argue emotionally, they argue for what they 'feel' is right. The facts don't matter as much to different people.
I have always prepared to hold my own in an argument by understanding the other person's position so well, I know I could stand up and passionately and convincingly argue their point of view as well as my own. To me that means I have a good understanding of both sides of the argument. I have a friend who told me that was just a fundamental waste of time.
Unfortunately with the degree of polarization we seem to have on some issues, each side has stopped listening to anything but how loud they can bang their own drum.
It is really rather nice to come to a little corner of the Internet where the discussion is between gentlemen. No trolls and no flame wars - I rather like it gentlemen. If it takes a rule of order or two to accomplish, no issues. Civil discourse is after all a rare commodity today.
Best,
