Thanked: 1Rightio then
Hi folks,
My name is Josh, and while I am not feeling particularly depressed, I must be just a little odd. I've decided to take a blade to my own throat.
I've always had a bit of romantic fascination with the concept of straight razors.
My first razor (and hone/brush/strop) are making their way from the ends of the Earth to Perth (Western Australia). Hopefully the razor makes it here before the w/e so the kids can give me something I want for Fathers day.

Welcome to SRP!
You have quite a few fellow Aussies to help you on your way if you're looking for some more local assistance. In the meantime, sit back, read all you can here at SRP, and ask any questions you may have.
Do you know if your razor is shave-ready? I.e. has it been honed by a pro? Or does it have the edge put on it in the factory? If it isn't shave-ready the best thing you can do straight away is send it to a pro to be properly honed up. I knopw that's the last thing you'll want to do after waiting for it to arrive, but I spent my first few months trying to learn to use a straight with a crappy edge, and it made for a truly miserable experience. And once it was honed by someone who knew what he was doing, the difference was like night and day.
Good luck!
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

Thanked: 4826Welcome. There is a ton of information here. If you can't find it just ask.
It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

Well if you do slice yourself - and you might as well just get it out of the way, I mean you're bound to do so - make sure you take a picture and put it on "The cut of the day" thread.
I assume that by your stating that the blade is being sent from the "ends of the Earth," you mean Canada - in which case, don't expect it before fathers day lol.
All joking aside, welcome to the forum! We are a group of guys who are pretty crazy about our hobby - ask any question you like (about shaving with a straight) - we are here to help. I hope your journey into the world of straight razor shaving will be as pleasurable as many of ours.
Nice intro btw.David

Yes, if you do cut/slice yourself, you'll want to make sure you rinse and clean the razor off quickly, make sure you get a tissue between the scales to clean and dry as well, as it can stain the blade and the blood can congeal in the pivot area, and that's just a recipe for rust and stains...remember, always protect your razor!

take your time read & watch everything, if stuck ask away plenty of really helpfull folk on here.
Some of the lads from over there are organising a meet up soon that might help you out a hell of a lot if you can attened,
some of them may be close enough to offer some face to face mentoring so you aren't learning in isolation like some of us.

Thanked: 1Hi Cangooner,
It's a used blade. W.H Morley and sons 5/8. From the description I got, it needs honing. I'll have a look around to see if I can find someone local to do it, otherwise I'll need to send it over east. I do intend to learn to hone it, but I'll gladly get a pro to do it the first time.
