Thanked: 0And in the category of no question is a dumb one...
New to the scene and enjoying everything so far. Hi all.
So here's a silly question: just starting out with straights. My hand is blocking my view in the mirror when I go to start especially around the sides. Every angle I try the damn thing is there to block! Tips? I feel like I must be holding something wrong.

Thanked: 0You'd think I had both in front of my eyes!
One to hold the skin, one to shave.

Best thing to do IMO is watch a few videos on YouTube showing guys shave with a straight. There's lots of them so you ought to be able to pick up plenty of visual clues to what you're doing right and wrong.

LOL - I agree with Wolfpack, some video's would help.
What I mean is, do you use your left hand so shave the left side of your face, with your right hand doing the stretching, and your right hand for the right side of your face?
edit - my favorite straight shaving video...

Ambidextrous with a right eye dominant. Learned to use my left eye as dominant when shaving the left side of my face. Not easy, but over a short period of time, about a month, I have looking at my left face side with my left eye and I'd swear I'm getting a better shave on that side.

I have not seen a good one handed video and it did take me a ehile to use two hands. Lynn's video is good. I watched it a few times before I knew what to look for in any video. Pick one you like and listen, then watch it again and again, and again. Some guys in videos are really fast shavers. GO SLOW

Thanked: 228I've never seen speed-shaving with a straight razor before. I'm in awe!
