Thanked: 0Big Texas Introduction
Greeting, I decided I'd introduce myself. My name is Brian and I like in the great state of Texas. I've been shaving with a DE razor for about 2 years. Prior to that I was ruining my face with an electric razor. I've always been fascinated with older technology, I still shoot films and have a darkroom in my house. I've always wanted to try and shave with a straight razor. About 4 weeks ago I bought a strop and a restored razor. The first shave was okay but a couple or nicks and some razor burn. No problem as I really liked the overall experience. Unfortunately with my 6th shave I wasn't being careful and dropped the razor in the sink. And yes I now have 2 small chips in the blade. No worries as I will get it honed. I didn't have a backup so I bought a decent one on another forum that was shave ready. This razor was very comfortable compared to the first one and I liked the fact is was a 6/8 compared to a 5/8. Well as luck would have it I wasn't paying attention and relaxed my hand and sliced the side of my face. Not a deep cut but it really bleed. Trying to deal with the blood I put my razor in the cabinet not closing it all the way as it was still a little wet and it fell into the sink. Ugh! A little chip on the blade but enough to make a mark on the strop. So now I have 2 razors that need to be honed and I'm currently back to shaving with a DE. I'm not sure SE shaving is for me but I'm not giving up just yet. I realized I need to be more careful with the razor as it is a delicate piece of equipment. Once the razors are honed and working again hopefully I can continue to enjoy shaving with them.

As they say, "____ happens!" Welcome to THE Forum/fountain of knowledge. You list San Antonio as home base. Rupp Razors are in your town. You are also close to Houston where Sharptonn resides. He has good, frequent meet ups that pull shavers from all over the area. And I hope you are making use of the SRP Library, or at least going through the FAQs that have links to more complete sections.

Welcome to SRP!
Sounds like a rough start, but don't give up. The only beginner mistake you have left to accomplish is to slash the strop up.
It does get better and something like Neosporin will speed the healing of the cut.
As mentioned above, sharptonn can bring you up to speed.

Thanked: 0Thanks everyone for the vote of confidence. I know it will get better. I wasn't aware of anyone in San Antonio to hone the razor. That is great information, thanks!

Hi & welcome to the forum. I'm very sorry about your bad luck with the two razors you reentry acquired but don't let it get you down & don't give up, shit happens! Next time, try to be careful & not have slippery fingers & try not to drop your razors. It's a good thing you didn't go to one of the vendors & buy yourself a new razor. If it weren't for the drains & faucets, we wouldn't have such a problem with them. Let me say this. If you have learned your lesson, go back to where you purchased the last one & try to find another one that is shave ready but keep in mind that many people say they are shave ready but if you go to the classifieds here & see one that says shave ready, chances are it is. Also there are vendors on here that do honing & you can send the other two out as long as they aren't too bad & have them honed for an affordable price. Usually when I make a mistake it is the only time it will happen & I will make sure it doesn't happen again but like I said, things do happen. Just make sure you alway dry your hands off & wash all soap off & it will likely not happen again. So now you have chipped two razors & sliced your face. I hope that doesn't leave a scar. Go to the Library & read the br=einners section & then learn to strop if you really don't know how to yet. Meanwhile you are sending your damaged razors out to be repaired as long as that can be done. Hopefully they are small chips & you'll come out smelling like a rose. Life sucks sometimes but it won't always be that way. You did the right thing buy buying spare but unfortunately it didn't work out that way but in the future I hope your luck changes for the better. Hang in there & good luck with straight shaving, you'll get there! Stay cool & be careful & everything will be ok. Let us know how it goes. We're here for you & if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. It never hurts to ask.

Thanked: 10I am new to this SE gig as well and luckily I haven't damaged my razor yet (but who knows). I have made other mistakes that have set me back here and there. A careless slice down the cheek, a gash over the lip, and the odd nick here and there mostly due to shaving when I should be sleeping. I have a crazy schedule and bounce between nights and days a couple times each week. Stick it out it does get better. Just wanted to give you a welcome since I live just down the road a piece (Seguin TX). I hope to find someone local to help me a bit once I need my razor honed (doing well still) and again when I start honing myself. For now welcome and best of luck
