Thanked: 5Hello SRP!
Well I just wanted to say hello. I have done a lot of reading on this site over the last couple of days. I received a new dovo straight razor fromMy wife for my birthday. I had mentioned that I was sick and tired of paying for the expensive cartridge blades an told my wife I was probably going to just beat the system by not shaving anymore! Well my wife dislikes facial hair so much that I got a new straight razor for my b day. Now I had never considered this before but have fully embraced the idea especially when she said this was a blade that could last for my lifetime. Since opening the gift I have done a lot of reading on this site. Checked out a few videos and found it all to be very informative. Especially learning what a strope is. My wife never said anything when I commented on it but I thought for sure my strope was a new 3 point harness for my AK until I got onto this site and got a little learned. Haha. To all the members of SRP I want to say thank you for all your contributions. I took all that reading in and found it all very helpful for my first straight razor shave last night. All in all it went pretty well. Most of my face is still in tact! Lol just kidding. no oops moments other than fouling up my strope by nicking the blade a couple of times at the tip. I will nevertheless be sending it out to be honed. I look forward to many more shaves. Kind of funny I never thought I would say that! As I'm sure all on here understand I have found a new joy in a task I never really thought about before other than with contempt. So again thank you SRP and hello.

Welcome to SRP. There are quite a few of us in the pacific northwest and we just had a 20 person meet-up last month. Please ask any questions you may have as this is a large group of very knowledgable individuals.
Let us know how the shaves are progressing!

Welcome to SRP!
Glad to hear that you are going to get your blade pro honed. It makes a big difference in the shave. Nicking the strop during the first month or so of shaves is so common, it is almost a requirement. Maybe your wife can get you new one for Christmas. In the mean time, you can sand out small nicks and rubber cement down any flaps - rough strop spots can roll the blade edge.

Thanked: 5Thanks for the warm welcome. Well after spending some more time reading the FAQ and the library as suggested. I went ahead and spent some time practicing my strop with a butter knife and then once I felt confident with the motion I went ahead and and tried to "refresh" my razor which had suffered from my poor form of stropping in my first couple of attempts. I used the fabric side of my strop with some chrom on it then went to the leather. Fortunately for me this seemed to really fix my previous mistake all except the very tip which I knicked into the strop pretty good. I have done two more partial shaves since my first. On my first shave I was able to get a descent full face shave on my last two I just did my cheeks. I am looking forward to my shave in the morning because I finally got some descent soap I hope. Until now I had just been using canned barbesol. I got some brands kit that has a windmill on it. Van der something or other. It was just the first kit I saw on Amazon with a stand boars brush apothecary mug and soap. I'm hoping it will help my results. I think I am way too slow in my shave so that by the time I get to the really prickly's on my chin and upper lip I feel like my cream has dried out a bit and my whiskers aren't as soft as when I first lather up.'im thinking after I do my sides I will just re lather up with the soap. Im sure I still will send the razor in for a re hone soon as although I do feel like I got it "refreshed"'a bit I'm sure it will still be much better after re hone. My wife got me a dovo "best quality" from SRD so from what I understand I briefly got to feel a pro hone on a truly shave ready razor. Hopefully after that next hone I will be ale to do the rest myself. I called my barber who owns and operates an old school barber shop who he used for his straights to get honed? And he said he usually does it himself and offered to help me learn so I look toward to that. again thanks for the welcome and all the info here.
