Thanked: 0Graduating to a straight - from Australia
Hi there!
I've very recently ordered my first straight razor after a period of about 6 months using a DE with great enjoyment. I ordered a restored razor from ShaveSmith, who seems to be fairly well reviewed around the traps. It's a 5/6 T. Noonan & Co spike. I don't do a full shave, but rather sculpt around the jawline and cheeks - from what I have read a spike (despite its perils) is useful for that purpose in that you have a definite edge to work with / look around.
I am very much looking forward to finding new and exciting ways to slice bits of my lip, nostril, ear and cheeks. I joined another shaving forum a few weeks ago but the tone here seems much more conversational so I found my way here. I have found a wealth of knowledge about starting off with a straight here.
I will no doubt be back seeking further instruction after my first few passes with the new razor.
Thanks!
Owen

Welcome aboard. I have heard great things about ShaveSmith. Hope all continues to go well.
The older I get the more I realize how little I actually know.

Thanked: 10Congratulations and welcome. And watch that point very closely, I speak from experience. Take your eyes off of it and it will bite you. Luckily mine was only minor.

Welcome to SRP - I trust you will find it a very helpful place.
Regarding the spike - after steering clear when I started out I've come to use them as my go to. Working around my Mo is much easier with a spike.

Thanked: 0Great to see so many locals or close-enough-to-locals (living in Canberra you just sort of accept that a 3 hour drive is as close to local as you're going to get when it comes to forums) onboard. Cheers gents - I may need to call on your expertise when it comes time for a first honing or if I look to invest in locally available honing gear myself.
Thanks for the kind words and advice - so far so good after 3 shaves. I can see a lot of coin tip-toeing its way out the door if I spend too much time on here though.
