New here, not new to wet-shaving.
Hello everyone. My name is Jeff and I have been a collector of straight razors on and off since I was in elementary school, I believe. I stopped for a long time, but picked the hobby back up in the early 2000's out west, sold them all off in the mid-2000's and have recently decided that I am about through with disposable, hardly sharp razors! I am currently back into collecting usable straight razors and decided that this website, thanks so very much to Lynn Abrams, was a must for my shaving and collecting needs. I look forward to meeting as many members as possible here and I hope to find some that live near me here in Louisville, Ky. Thanks and see you at the sink!

Welcome Wildman
First, put Louisville in your info so others know where you are. There are several members there who can assist.
The wiki is also another source you will find useful.
Above all, ask when you have questions. If you don't care where you are, you are not lost.

Hi & welcome to SRP. You will have plenty of enjoyment here & there is also a wealth of information here if you start at the Library:
You will want to start out with a straight razor whether used or new. If used, know what to look for like lots of hone wear to the spine & edge. Here is a place to learn a lot of information:
Straight Razor Place Library - Straight Razor Place Library
You will need a strop first too. That is one of the most important things for a new member to have & to utilize it correctly so that you can maintain the shave ready razors you will obtain. One thing many new members, (not you), will do is not to get their stropping technique down just right & will dull a blade. There was a recent new guy, I'm not mentioning any names, but he had a nice new razor & it was either not shave ready like it was supposed to be because he bought it from another vendor & he dulled it worse by trying to hone it. It was very possible that all he had to do was strop it real good but we don't know that for sure. Shit happens & we all make mistakes, but we learn from them too. You will also need a brush, a mug & some shaving soap(s).
You will eventually need a second straight razor for when you send the first one out to be honed, you'll need something to shave with. I don't know if you plan to do your own honing but if not, you will want to have one handy to shave with when you send one out to be honed. I can go on & on about straight razors but the best thing for you to do is to cruise the forum & in the Library & you will find out a lot of good information. Also you can look for meetings & get togethers here:
Straight Razor Place - Meetings and Get-Togethers
And also try to find a member in your area if you need some one on one help. I know there is a way to find them but I can't find it right now. It is driving me crazy that I can't find that page. I have searched for hours & can't find it. Just ask if there is someone in your state & someone will chime in hopefully that can help you out. If I find that page, I will let you know. Good luck & have fun!

Hello and welcome to the cult...club! I said club!
Mastering implies there is nothing more for you to learn of something... I prefer proficient enough to not totally screw it up.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. I have shaved with a straight razor before. It was a Blackboy with the trans-green scales from, of all places, Mingo, Iowa. I forget who made it. I should've kept it. I know how to set the bevel, hone through the different grits and strop. I will need more practice. I have watched many of the videos that Mr. Abrams has put on YouTube. I will post pics of my new razors as I get them. I am on a small buying spree right now. I've bought one a week lately. I need to chill out on that, or my wife will have a fit, as finances have not been above par lately. But then again, I am not buying expensive razors anyhow. I will keep a library of all my razors and the accessories that go with shaving, like my strop, stones and soaps. I will go into my profile and put Louisville into my place of residence. See you later at the sink!
