Thanked: 0Greetings from South Africa
Greetings all,
My name is Ruan and I am from Durban, South Africa. I have been shaving with a shavette for quite some time now and thoroughly enjoy the experience. The time has eventually arrived that I can upgrade my kit to a real straight razor. Just too many choices out there .
I have been trolling the forum for a while and see that there are many very knowledgeable people here. I am really looking forward to joining in discussions and learning from the forum.
Cheers
Ruan

Thanked: 3226Hey and welcome Ruan. Yes, there are seemingly too many choices out there at first glance. If you have not already done so check out the forums Library section and the Beginners. If you search the Beginners section there is some good info in there as some of the question answered may be of help. If you have any questions be sure and ask because members on here would like to help, I'm sure. There is also a group of people on here from SA that might be able to help source some things locally too.

Thanked: 0Thanks Bob,
I will be sure to check out the sections and ask when I am not sure.
I have found two brands in SA - Dovo and Giesen & Forsthoff. The choice for me is now whether I get a Carbon or Stainless Steel razor. I live in an extremely humid climate so naturally Stainless would be the better choice to aid in corrosion resistance.

Thanked: 3226You are welcome.
I would use the search function for the forum and research comments on the new production Giesen & Forsthoff. Seems I recall the vintage G&F razors are well thought of but the current production ones might be a different matter. Best to check it out as I am going by an old man's memory, possibly faulty, on that.
Yes, I would consider a stainless blade for your climate knowing how humid it can get there. We do not have that problem where I live but I still like stainless blades. Stainless will still rust but at a very much slower rate than regular carbon steel blades. It is a good move to treat them as you would a regular carbon steel blade in a humid climate anyway.

Hi and welcome. From my reading I can say that the newer g&f blades are not though to be the same quality as the vintage ones. You may be better to go the dovo and play it safe. Any questions feel free to ask the everyone here is always willing to help
