Hi, Im Andrew...
I will be heading up north from Brisbane sometime in September, as I want to do the Whitsundays again (haven't been in a while), and will be hopefully visiting my uncle in the Atherton tablelands... If timing works out, Im happy to bring a straight and give you a couple of tips if we find a mutually suitable time/place to meet up. I can leave the straight with you to practice with, and when you are done, you can just post back to me.
I've been straight shaving for about 18 months now... was quite active on this forum for the first 12 months, but everytime I visit I am inspired to buy something new lol, so have been avoiding the site lately to help resist temptation... Everyone has such nice razors, great history, it is quite easy to spend a lot of money. I've just got over the last hurdle of huge expenses so I am allowing myself to wade into this wonderful world of straight razors again lol.
As a recent newbie, once you have done a few passes and realised you control the blade and it's not going to leap at your jugular, you will gain confidence fast, and can move on to the enjoyment in obtaining smooth effective passes. For me, the chin was the hardest (I have a chin dimple), but 6 months of using a straight I very rarely nick myself these days... when I do, it is due to lack of concentration rather than experience.

G'Day YMMNV and welcome aboard.
Great to see another Aussie on the road to 'Acquisition Disorders' ...hehehe
Sunbird is located down around Townsville and may get in touch later and there are many others up your way IIRC.
Any questions - just ask - not saying we have answers, but ask anyway......hahahaHang on and enjoy the ride...
