Thanked: 1New member - introducing myself
Hi,
I have just joined this website because in researching my family history I found out that my great uncle sold straight-edged razors from his shop at 23 Washington Street in Manhattan from the late 1890s to the early 1900s. They were made in Germany and sold under the name Faris & Sargus. I have letterhead with that name on it from 1910. Now I am looking to purchase one for family and sentimental reasons, not for resale. I have listed an ad in the Wanted section.
Many thanks.

Thanked: 1It was a dry goods shop. Sold both men and women's items. The address no longer exists in New York as I understand it.

Thanked: 1Thank you, Harold. I appreciate hearing back from you. I am determined to find one of these razors to own. It might take a few years and a few thousand searches on eBay, but I will persevere!

Hi Jane and welcome. Good luck with your search. Hopefully you find one sooner rather than later. Local antique stores to the area of the business might be a good place to start as it was likely locals buying from him.

Hi Jane & welcome aboard. It is very interesting your grandfather sold straight razors from his store...................very cool indeed!!! I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for a Faris & Sargus. I love all straight razors pretty much except for ones made in Pakistan & the ones on the "Razors Not To Buy" list. Many came from Germany where the steel used was very good but there are many others as well. I looked in my references & couldn't find that name. I grew up in Houston, Texas & I never knew of any made here yet I do have one straight razor that is stamped H.Wolfer, Houston, TX. & never seen another one since so I hope you do find one with that name on it. I'll research it some more. Ever think of using a straight razor?
Any questions just ask.
Good luck my friend.Last edited by engine46; 10-07-2015 at 05:34 PM.

Welcome,
I too have a love of family and history. I'm pretty much a Mastodon with computers and online, I get by but I struggle.
Perhaps this will be of some help;
