Gentlemen,
I assume GRjr refers to De Vergulde Hand, available in the U.S. from several vendors including Royal Shave: De Vergulde Hand Shaving Soap

Hello Georg, I am also from the Netherlands, there are a few of us (out of the Netherlands) here if you have any questions you can always pm me.
@Obie de Vergulde hand is a cheap but good soap over here it is about $ 1 to $ 1,3 for a tub, I think most off us learn how to lather with this soap.Last edited by Kamp; 10-28-2015 at 10:34 AM.

Didn't know it was available in the US..and yes, that's the one. I've been using it for as long as I can remember. It was the soap my granddad used and my dad after that so it has always been available. I've never tried anything else apart from canned foam during my military service. Didn't even consider it when I made the step towards using a straight razor for shaving.
Thanks for the clarification.

Kamp,
I used a couple tubs some years ago, but did not care for the soap. It lathered well, and the fragrance was pleasing, but the cushion was nowhere near what I want for my Hollywood face. Some gentlemen, though, use it regularly.

I know Obie I don't use it anymore because I have beter soaps in my den now. But when you are learning how to lather it is nice to have a cheap soap
to practise your lather making skills with.

GRjr,
Whatever brand of soap works for your straight razor shave is what matters. This now is the opportunity to begin exploring the treasure of soaps and creams available for traditional shavers.
I am happy you have decided on the straight razor. You will never regret it. By the way, welcome to Straight Razor Place. We're delighted to have you with us.

I've purchased a Mühle Soap and a Dr Harris (Thanks Kamp for the tip, nice stuff.)
Also started shaving with a broader razor as it seems to fit my beard better.
I have the feeling I am not going to regret this, getting better result with the tips Kamp gave me and I can advise anyone new here to ask questions from the "oldies".
There is no shame in asking relevant questions. Afterall you intend to shave with a crazy sharp object... It does help when you talk to people about the problems you encounter and some "technical stuf".
It's a skill, you have to learn by practice, remember it's a turn based game..:-), you have to wait for your next try until you have new credits, there are no short-cuts (pun intended) so things take time.
I'm enjoying the journey and I wish everyone the same experience. I will be an advocate for straight razor shaving from now on.
Thanks to everyone who pointed me in the right direction and the wonderfull support this forum gives one searching for the road.
Have a nice day everyone.
