Thanked: 0Hello from Hudson Valley New York!
Hey folks,
I've been reading the forums for the past month or so as a welcomed distraction; see, I've been laid-off for the 4th time since 2009 effective this week. I was notified before Thanksgiving that this would be my Christmas present! As I grind through the job search thing, I've been looking at getting into straight razor shaving as a new hobby that is kind of a few degrees of separation from my existing ones - I love knives, from pocket to chef to swords. I love traditional archery, with my prized possession being a 1972 Fred Bear Kodiak. I also enjoy and small game hunt with a Marlin Model 81 from the 1940's. So the idea of being able to take something that was made with craftsmanship and use it regularly, as it had been for decades or will be for decades if new, and learning how to maintain it similarly to the items I maintain now is right in my wheelhouse!
I look forward to learning from you guys & will use a small portion of my severance check coming this week to fund my starter razor and strop!

Welcome aboard gb12549. Yes, Cris is right if you have not seen that yet & move on from there. You seem to have some interesting hobbies & share a lot in common with a lot of members here. Be patient, take your time & get ready for a whole new & cool world! You'll definitely never go back to shaving like you were before if you were using the cartridge type razors. Great to have you here.
Good luck my friend.

Hello and welcome to the SRP forums. If you are interested in a vintage blade check out this months giveaway. I believe one of the items to be a shave ready 5/8 Genco (made in NY), which would absolutely fit the bill as a fine starter razor.

Thanked: 4Nice hobbies you got there
as all the guys above stated, start with the library, its a goldmine of information. Also for buying your razor, you might want to have a look around the classifieds section, all the razors there are in a good state. Also a little headsup, straight razor shaving can turn into a serious bottomless pit, so you might want to Have a clear limit as to how much to spend, and a good amount of research on how to spend it.
Good luck from a fellow beginner on the journey ^^/
