Thank you all for the greetings and advice. I had some dealings with Larry at Whipped Dog previously and found him to be a great guy, so I ordered the Poor Man's Strop from him to get started.

The gentleman that I purchased the Ralf Aust from informed me this morning that he purchased the razor from SRD and that it was shave ready. He is also including an antique store razor that he used for practice along with an inexpensive strop. He wanted to make sure that I didn't mess up the Ralf Aust right off the bat.

There is a lot of generosity and kindness in this community, and I am grateful.

I have been a straight razor owner for 24 hours. Is it okay if I snort with derision that another forum named the Feather Artist Club the Straight Razor of the Year?

You are entitled to your opinion, and they are entitled theirs. Im not suprised they picked a shiney new razor that can quite possibly shave proper as well (I dont own one). In the end its all about personal preferences and those guys sound like real fans.

Don't snort too loud the feather is one of the finest tools for shaving around, and no maintenance required. This alone makes it a great tool to learn with, as you will mess up your edge in the beginning. I still use mine for travel and you don't get a better edge than a feather blade. Tc

No disrespect intended to the Feather AC or its users. I don't doubt the effectiveness or the sharpness of it. I was surprised by the designation because I thought that the Feather AC was considered to be part of a different category of shaving tool: shavettes. I considered purchasing one, but I read that they are not necessarily a good transition to straights because the shaving is different, perhaps more difficult or requiring more care because of the sharpness of the exposed blade. That also seemed like an odd choice for straight razor of the year considering the nice non-shavette straights that are being made these days. "Snorting with derision" was probably not a great choice of words.

Thanks, Mike. I have been getting good advice and definitely having a little fun.

Back to the subject of awards being given in the wrong classification. I was listening to the radio yesterday and heard what groups made the Rock Hall of Fame this year. The class included Chicago, Deep Purple, Cheap Trick and Steve Miller. Makes sense. Actually, I would have thought that all of them were already in the Hall of Fame. One can hear their music on classic rock stations all the time. Then there was one that threw me: NWA, a rap group. Just like I didn't know a shavette could be considered the straight of the year, it never occurred to me that a rap group would go into the Rock Hall of Fame. I doubt if I have ever heard one of their creations at any time and certainly not on any rock station I listen to.

I love Labrador Retrievers. I have raised some fine litters. After this week, I will not be surprised to find out that a LabraDoodle has been named the Labrador of the Year.
