Default New to Straight Razor Shaving

Since you are new to this, odds are good that you have no basis to assess the actual shave readiness of that blade or the competency of the honer.

For that reason, I would like to ask you the source of your razor. What is the specific razor that your bought and from whom did you buy it? It may give us a sense of the likelihood of your razor actually being shave ready.
It's a honed and cleaned up sight unseen vintage from LARRY from WD. It hasn't arrived yet. So I don't know exactly SR it is. I didn't want to shell out a whole lot of dough at first on an expensive piece until I learn all the essentials of SR shaving. I also a strop set coming from him as well. I'll post it up here when it arrives.

    Thanks everyone for your hospitality.

Hey Bleacherbum76, welcome and congrats on joining the club. I can say that this is a toe in the water of what could be a new addiction. But hang on and enjoy the journey the gentlemen on this site are very generous with answers to questions and help. I have only been at this since last Oct. and I can tell you take your time. Don't rush one step and if you are not feeling well or are distracted maybe don't go with the straight that day. You will really want to focus on what you are doing these first times using the razor. Patience and sticktoitiveness go a long way. Enjoy and good day.

Welcome , if you would like, unless your in a witness protection program, post your location in your profile so that if your close to some other straight razor wacko, we can help you a little more. As to not spending a lot in the beginning, good for you.!!!
Keep that mentality going forward, and send your blade out for a while and not spend money in hones, right now the only way you will know shave ready is by who hones it. Myself I've never had one honed by Larry , but he has a following. Plus if you want to stay inexpensive plus be able to see what your buying , might I suggest the classifieds here. Good luck , and have fun with it,,,,,, slooowwwlllyyyy. Tc

Welcome from SE Washington State! Walla Walla to be precise! (Yes there really is a Walla Walla Washington/Bugs Bunny didn't make it up)

As my good friend Tc has said including your location could be of a great help to you. Very recently a new member was requested to provide where he was located and once he did there was an experienced member just a very few miles from him. Hands on learning it the absolute best way of learning.

And as has also been pointed out. This age old art takes patience. It has a huge learning curve but once semi mastered it is very rewarding.

When you have questions, look in the Library/Wiki if you don't find the answer please ask! If you feel uncomfortable asking in public contact me or any other Mentor and any of us will be glad to help you.

It's a long strange trip but well worth the journey. Enjoy the ride!
