Thanked: 1New to Straight Razor Shaving
Good afternoon Gents,
Just wanted to introduce myself to the forum. I have been strictly a DE shaver for about 5 years now and just recently ordered a vintage straight razor and strop set honed shave ready by the seller, although still waiting for it to arrive.
Glad to be here!!

Hi & welcome aboard Bleacherbum76. You are in the right place to learn an art that is centuries old. You will need to learn to strop so the best thing you could do is to go to the Library above & then read the Beginners Guide & go from there. You will learn to strop along the way. You can also use a butterknife to practice stropping with so you don't cut a good strop or dull a sharp edge. There is a lot to learn here so just be patient & take your time. Great to have you here & if you have any questions, ask away. You will be answered.
Good luck my friend.Last edited by engine46; 02-04-2016 at 03:18 AM.

Thanked: 3795When a beginner puts that blade to his face for the first time, there are only two issues at play--the shaver and the blade. A beginning shaver has no clue how to use his new razor. Only practice will fix that. For the blade, it's a matter of both the condition/quality of the blade AND the competency of the honer. Since you are new to this, odds are good that you have no basis to assess the actual shave readiness of that blade or the competency of the honer.
For that reason, I would like to ask you the source of your razor. What is the specific razor that your bought and from whom did you buy it? It may give us a sense of the likelihood of your razor actually being shave ready.
