    Default Hello From Texas

    Hi All from Belton Texas!
I have been wanting to try straight razor shaving since I was way too young to shave. I am turning 50 in March so I think it's a great time to try it. After reading lots of info on this site (thank you all for your dedication to newcomers), I purchased a razor from a member and I cant wait to give it a try! I know it will take a lot of practice to get good but I so enjoy a nice close shave that I know I will get there. I already use oil, and a brush and shave soap and after shave cream as I hate canned shave cream since I never get an enjoyable shave from it.
Thanks again! Happy to find a place that has answered my MANY questions.
    Brian

Welcome. Looks like you're on the right track. All you need yet is a good strop.

My dad sent me a strop that has been hanging in the garage for as long as I can remember. It's a JM Garrett but not like one I've seen before: all the strops I've seen are smooth surface but this one if perforated with holes. I've cleaned and oiled it. I will see if it is usable.

I know that it's a long drive, but if you want to get a real jump start on your razor journey, you might want to make the 250 mile trip to Burkburnett this weekend.
    Check it out HERE.

Oh, and "long drive" is relative. A few of us are coming down from Minnesota and Wisconsin, but Bruno wins the long distance prize by crossing the Atlantic!!!

Welcome from a fellow Texan! Take a look around and ask lots of questions they come up. Just an FYI, we like pictures...especially when talking about your new shaving toys

Hi Bounds & welcome aboard from one Texan to another. Hah! That would be something if our birthday's are on the same day! Mine is coming up also but I'll have 10 on ya. I live in the Houston area. You're definitely in the right place. I want to make that meet so badly but it doesn't look like it's going to happen.
If you can't make the meet, you can find someone possibly near you or the next best thing is to click on the Library above, then the Beginners Guide & go from there. Learn to use that strop & practice with a butterknife for now until you feel more confident. I haven't seen too many perforated strops plus that one is an heirloom so you don't want to damage it by cutting it or dulling a good blade. Also you can go to Youtube & watch video's. When you do, type in Lynn Abrams name, the owner of this forum & you will see his video's about many things on this subject. Great to have ya here. Any questions, just ask.
    Good luck my friend.
