Can't help you with the upper lip and chin, I haven't shaved those areas since I started. Too many issues and people think I look funny w/o facial hair....

As far as lathering, I have had some recent issues when switching from cream to hard soaps, especially with the quality of water we have here. This video helped oodles...

Although YMMV depending on the soap that you have.

TLDR; Experiment with water quantity and soap amount, I found more soap then gradually adding water will help you get to where you need to be

You're very welcome and best of luck! One thing I forgot to mention, is that if you have certain problem spots, it helps to use your previous shaver to cover that area until you get more and more comfortable. Then just add in a little bit of those problem areas as you go.
