Gidday! I'd be interested to know the best places to get supplies in NZ. I've been using Kiwishaver and Fineshave but they're more geared towards safety razors. I've also found another place called Cutler road in Gisborne that sells straights and does honing.

Would you recommend purchasing a brand new straight or trying on a restored vintage first? They have a nice but pricy Thiers Issard set or should I look to buy an old vintage to try out first. I'm practising with a shavette at the moment so if it works out and I grasp the technique I may opt for a new straight. I'm just a bit worried I may damage it when stropping.

Gidday from the Waikato (someone has to live here). I have been down to your fair city a few times but alas only since the earthquakes.

How did you find the vintages you purchased on TradeMe. Are you restoring yourself as I wouldn't really have the time. How much effort is involved? I've been debating whether or not I go with a brand new straight or get a vintage first to practice my stropping.

I have not purchased anything from cutler road and have read here the new production TI razors have quality control issues although they shave fine once sorted. Another option is the classifieds here, or Straight Razor Designs if you want new. Stropping takes practice, but once you master it you can maintain your razor for a long time.

Welcome to the best forum on razors in the world. The knowledge here is second to none. I would go with vintage. Its more cost effective until you learn what style you like. That will change as you perfect your technique. You will have to strop any razor you get anyway. The most important thing is its shave ability. That alone will make or break you. New or vintage its the most important factor. If you have a local shop that sells and hones straights I would start there. SRD will sell you a shave ready razor or the classifieds here are hard to beat. Welcome and good luck to you.

Cheers, I'm actually a Brit who's moved here a few years back so sometimes still struggle with the mangled vowels . I'm am now in the habit of ending every sentence with 'eh' though so fitting in quite well.

    Welcome mate

I'm new here too so not much help on the technical stuff but i did buy an ok razor off tm recently and it's now at Cutler Road getting honed so I'll let you know how that goes. I decided not to buy new as they are expensive and it's not always possible to determine if you are getting good value.

    Hello from the Tron.

I'd be interested to hear how it goes with the honing. I see they also sell restored vintage razors so that might be an option. I'll keep an eye out on TM as well.

Razor is back and looking and feeling very sharp. He did a bit of a polish and tightened the pin too so all round great value.

For my next razor I would consider on of his restored razors if I like the look of it as trademe is a bit of a gamble.
