    Default Hello from New Zealand

I joined this site on 03-25-2012 just after I purchased a straight razor but I never got going and soon sold it and went back to the dark side, some of my failure I put down to my poor vision but mainly the thing just scared the hell out of me.

Many years later here i am again with much more skill and I hope a better attitude, my Gotta 120 is away being honed and I look forward to spending the rest of the year working on getting a good shave with it.

I have watched a lot of videos and will be lowering my expectations ...

    Nice to be back,

    Brian

Take your time. There are ups and downs with every aspect of this shaving journey. I can remember euphoria as a beginner of great shaves and then downers when I realised I had damaged and edge, or didn't know how to maintain it properly. I'm unsurprised at the number of people who drop out early on due to these cycles.
    It gets better.
And then you go onto the next stage of your journey- e.g. learning to hone or something, and the cycle repeats itself!!!

Well done for getting back on the horse, but just remember....you may need to invest in a few more honing episodes over the next year as you learn to care and maintain for your blade properly. That is expected and not something to beat yourself up about!

Hi from the West Island. [emoji6] There sure is a learning curve. I would recommend a good moisturising balm. It really helps with razor burn and healing the skin after rough shaves. I personally like Shaver Heaven Balms but there are a few good 'uns out there. Make sure you've got a good easy lathering soap/cream too.

What does your kit look like? What are you using for a brush? Soap? Etc.

Well mate I have been wet shaving since I was a wee lad back in the 60's. I used my mums Gillette tech if I remember right and yeah just hand soap and lots of bits of tissue by the time I was done.

Over the last 4 years I have gone back to the old ways and bought and sold a lot of DE and SE razors ... and one straight. My main razor is a Ever-ready 1914 but I have a bunch of cartridge razors for those mornings when there is just not enough time.

i have settled on a Bluebeards Revenge Synthetic brush and I think the knot is about 24mm, nice brush actually has lasted well never shed. My soap is L A Shaving Company unscented and it's great stuff that doesn't make me smell like a girl or burn my skin. My new straight is actually an old Gotta 120 on good condition with a nice unmarked edge, it feels light and delicate and generally it's great to hold. I'm looking forward to shaving with it.

    Thanks for the welcome mate

Only trouble I see with trying a straight is that because they looks so nice I will want to own more than I need.

    Bugger!
