Thanked: 1new from north carolina
i am a long time wet shaver using mostly vintage gillette safety razors. i have never shaved with a straight razor yet tho i intend to in the future. i cannot at this stage post any photos as i have no camera and dont know how. i have fallen behind in technology im afraid.anyway i do own my grandfathers straight razor given to me by his youngest daughter my aunt who is 88. it is in a reddish slide together box labeled twins and pictures two twin stick figure men. the other side of the box reads georgia barber supply co. savannah ga. and stamped germany.the box is in very good shape. the razor is in apperance pretty good condition scales are fine sort of off white with grain in them.the pins may have no washers and the ends are sort of silver in color with twin markings.the blade tang is marked j.a. henckels twinworks solingen germany on the other side of the tang the word TWINS with twins logo on each side.the blade tip is square.the tang is also marked pat off.the blade has tiny nicks seen with a magnifying glass.my grandfather was born in 1893 and was in france with the us army in ww1. i have a photo of him in uniform.he died in 1935 from the effects of being gased on the battfield in france according to the family. i never knew him but this was his razor according to my aunt.good to be part of your community.john

Welcome to SRP!
You have a very nice heirloom Henckels razor that most likely has ivory scales and Henckels are nice shavers.
I recommend sending it out to be professionally honed.
In the meantime, start reading the Beginner's Section in the Library. It will answer a whole lot of your questions and feel free to ask us anything, we are here to help.
You probably want to update your location in your profile to include where you are in NC. We have members all over that state and hopefully one of them is close enough to give you some one on one mentoring. Some people never go crazy. What truly horrible lives they must lead - Charles Bukowski

Hi and welcome. Sounds like you have inherited a great razor. Do as advised and send it to a pro for cleanup and honing. Wouldn't be a bad idea to start with a cheaper less sentimental razor to make any beginner mistakes on. Good luck and any questions or help needed just ask

If you run into trouble shaving, let me know. I fish and hike near Brevard pretty often and can be talked into a malted at Rocky's pretty easily.

Thanked: 3795Yes, definitely set that razor aside for at least several months. You need to get all the stupid mistakes out of your system with a razor that is not a family heirloom.
