Thanked: 0New member from Kentucky
My name is Hayes, I'm a college student that has long been interested in shaving with a straight razor. I have finally started seriously looking into it and saving up some money to invest in the necessary equipment. I'm here to learn what I can, and have already greatly appreciated all the "Beginner" information available. Now I'm ready to make the jump and get a razor and a strop (have always shaved with a cartridge razor, already have a brush).

Thanked: 0I am in the process of finding a good affordable razor to start with. I have gleaned that despite "ready-to-shave" claims, razors generally need to be honed prior to shaving. I am interested in getting a hone, but am concerned about messing up my blade due to my naïveté. Should I get my razor professionally honed the first time or just give it a shot myself? And if I should get it done professionally, any suggestions on where to do that? Thanks!

You can search our classifieds and pick up a good used shave ready razor right here. It will be from someone who uses them so it would be good to start, leave the honing fir later till you know how to shave and strop. These two items take some time to learn, if your shaving with a crap edge, it will make learning hard, and you don't know what a shave ready edge us till you use one. The classifieds are a great place to get started. Also you can find guys who hone there too. Tc

Hayes, Best of welcomes. You landed in the goldmine for getting superb help for learning the art. As you can see from the responses already - we love to help guys learn to love their shaves. I'm hoping someone near you responds & is able to get some face to face time - it really helps speed up the learning curve. You mentioned not wanting to foul up an edge from beginning honing skills - a very wise observation. I successfully clobbered several edges just from beginning stropping - and destroyed 5 strops in the process ($KaChing$). You needn't spend much to get going. Don't worry about getting *THE* right razor. The quality of the edge will have alot more to do w/ your learning & satisfaction. 'Hope to hear more from you. You're about to have the best shaves of your life.

Thanked: 0I really appreciate all the warm welcome. Not only is this my first foray into shaving with a straight razor, it is my first time joining a forum as well. I just bought a Gotta 120 from the classifieds that I am very excited about. I also ordered a Poor Man's Strop kit from Whipped Dog as it seems like I am likely to ruin it as I learn anyway. When those come in I will follow Lynn's First Straight Razor Shave guide and give it a go!
