Can not emphasize the value of learning how to correctly use your strop because it will be a foundation upon which you will build your progress into this fabulous hobby. Go very very slow. Do not rush. Practice with the suggested butter knife. Get to the point where just the weight of the blade rests on the strop. Do not press the blade into the strop. Practice this slowly at a minimum of five different times a day. Eventually you will become proficient. Take time to learn this simple task. And you won't damage your razor or that new strop. Good luck and have fun with this new hobby.

Hey all. ... got another question. I just received two shave ready razors and have tried both. Wanted two just in case i messed one up. I found that both pulled terribly with two days growth right out of the shower. Didn't strop them the first time but did the second. I have been using a shavette for a long time and from what i see in here. ...it may be my angle. ...or is there a big difference between the shavette and a straight? My stropping is very light, slow, and deliberate. I find that my angle on the shavette is further away from my face than the straight. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Lay the spine almost upon your skin. Do NOT RUSH, hold razor very soft and loose. Small strokes. Easy does it. Using a str8 is an art. Have fun.

It jus takes time, if the razors really were shave ready(that really depends on who did it) it's your technique, you don't learn this in a couple weeks, it takes months sometimes, in the meantime keep practicing n finding the right pressure and angles. Tc

I waited for a couple days before my next shave. ... it took me 45 minutes and enjoyed every minute. Took my time and shaved slooooowly . Thanks for the advice banjo Tom. .... the angle was the deal. I even stropped correctly i believe. The shave i got was comparable to what i get with the shavette with a second pass over the chin which is the usual. I appreciate you guys. .... i think many would give up too quickly if it weren't for the advice here. Hope i can be of help when i get a little more experience. Thanks again.
