Thanked: 2New Member Here
Hi guys just joined the forum as I'm keen to start straight razor shaving answer this seems like a good start to my educational needs. I currently have a dovo 5/8" Full Ground, Carbon steel blade straight razor that was a gift for Christmas. I'm afraid to start using it as I don't know if it's shave ready or not.
I started out straight razor shaving a few months ago with just a dovo shavette. I figured I didn't want to spend much money on a razor firstly until I learned how to do it and if I even enjoyed it or not. I've been enjoying it very much and have been getting very good shaves with the disposal long blades for the shavette.
Now that I have a proper straight razor I read that them come from the factory already honed and that all of would need to do was strope it so I bought myself a dovo cowhide leather strop as a beginner strop. I have stopped he razor but I don't feel as if it is shave ready. I tested the blade gently on the hairs on my arm.
My question is should the razor be honed straight out of the box or should a stroke be sufficient for a while. I'm busting to have a shave with it but don't want it to be unpleasant

shevyshock, welcome to SRP. I just did a member search for Ireland and came up with 43 entries. Go to Members, click on search and advanced and enter Ireland. All current members will be shown. Select from the list ONLY senior Members that show recent activity. Send them a PM to see how close they are to you and if they can check your Dovo for shave ready. Be sure to maintain an open dialogue because they are willing to help you get your learning curve arcing in the right direction. There is no such thing as a stupid or silly question. Ask away and they will be more than glad to share their knowledge with you.

Thanked: 2284Welcome to the forum!
Depending on where it was purchased from, it is most likely NOT shave ready. What is good is that you have a great razor to start you Straight razor experience with, as well as a good strop. There's a member here from Wales who hones razors, and is probably the closest to you. His handle is Celticcrusader, hopefully he will stop by and chime in.
Enjoy your journey of straight shaving!Burls, Girls, and all things that Swirl....

Thanked: 2Thanks for this. I will check him out. I know that it hasn't been touched by the retailer or anything because the box was still factory sealed when it was delivered. I was kind of hoping that the place selling it would have honed it for me but it wasn't in the description so wasn't expecting it to be honed.

Thanked: 220Welcome! As mentioned above, I doubt that your razor has been sharpened to "shave ready" condition. If it didn't appear in the description, it's usually not. I know that the anticipation is torture, but it'll be worth the wait when you use it after the blade has been finished. I hope you enjoy the new experience, and good luck!
