Hi and welcome. Plenty of us DIYers here. Many of us had some pretty poor shaves starting out too trying blindly to figure it out. Get 1 razor honed by someone then you will have a benchmark for not just sharp but smooth too. Good luck and any questions feel free to ask
My wife calls me......... Can you just use Ed

Its nice to know, there's others out there with the same interests as myself. Fishing..!!!
And I'm also a marine tech., and enjoy restoration of razors. (My relax time)
Will be looking forward to seeing your first restore, and some fish pics from this season.
Enjoy
