Thanked: 1Noob from NC
Been lurking n reading for a while and finally decided to take the plunge and join (in truth, not being able to search did me in!)
I live in north central NC about 10 miles from the VA border.
I'm 63 and retired so I have the time required to learn honing, stropping and (last but of primary importance) SR shaving.
I just bought a BIN razor off fleabay to learn honing on. I'll start with sandpaper on glass initially but got a Raven Barber Hone to keep things happy once I can get a razor sharp.
I also BIN a box of parts to try my hand at refurbishing on. Here's hoping there's a gem in the bunch!!
I'm a tinkerer, technician and love to fish!!
Thanks for the excellent website. It's a wealth of information and knowledge.

Thanked: 4207Welcome aboard Ferd, or as my eyes read it, Fred from NC.
Lots of members in your area you can lean on to learn from.
Take your time learning the strop. Seems, like I did, you are jumping in at multiple levels all at once.
You will truly benefit from getting a properly honed razor before you learn to shave. In my own case, the smoothness I wasn't able to achieve initially caused a lot of unnecessary razor burn in those first few months till I took the plunge and met strangers, in person, to help me.
The rest has been shaving bliss, despite the odd knick along the way.
Cheers.

Hello Ferd and welcome to SRP!
There's plenty of geat people, information and help here.
Keep your eye on the Meetings and Get Togethers for something in your area. I've seen them come up every so often there.
Good luck on your shaving journey...it'll be fun!

Welcome to the forum, Ferd. You probably won't be too surprised how much fun can be had with shaving the "right" way and will likely enjoy the time you spend improving your honing skills. If you can't find the answers to your questions here with your newfound ability to search, don't be hesitant to ask away. Many guys here enjoy helping out our newest members get the hang of it all. As already mentioned, be sure to attend a local meeting if possible. That's a great way to get some hands-on help, especially with honing.

Thanked: 1Thanks guys. I'll probably play around with honing and stropping till whatever practice razor I'm fooling with passes the hht then I'll be able to justify a nice razor.
My first will probably be a refurb from a seller here. A new razor has no history, no romance. I have always thought a Cessna 140 was cooler than a G6 because you have to fly a 140. I like to drive, not go along for the ride. I like the idea of shaving myself with my razor with my edge rather than dragging some whizbang gizmo across my face that I have to buy over and over and over.
Before long I'll score a bare blade or a razor with a broken scale and I can try a rebuild. I've got time to play now and between old Schwinn's, fishing and now razors I'll fall behind on my honeydo list and my honey will have something to nag about and she'll be happy too!!
Win win I say!!
