Thanked: 3Hello!
Hi all. Bumpy here. I'm a custom razor maker... lol. By that I mean I'm a college math prof who started grinding a razor last week. I currently have 27 bandaids on my right hand... well 3 really. Anyway, I would like to post pics of my current project, but can't seem to do it.... any suggestions? I think that you guys would get a kick out of my hand made jigs. Of course, I'm a total beginner so my work looks terrible, but I have NEVER done anything more addictive. Can't wait to hear yall's comments about my hollow grinding setup. Bump

Welcome, Do you shave with a straight? That's the best place to begin with making razors, look to the vintage designs, they knew a thing about razors. Tc

Hi Bumby. As far as your pics, you can upload from computer and phones. Find the icon above. For me its the sixth one from the right in the middle row. Looks like a tree. Click on it the choose file under the computer tab. Locate your pic and click on it. Then uplaod file. It takes a minute to happen but it happens.
Hope this helps. Would love to see yout pics. As had been said here many times, it didnt happen unless you post a pic. Ha.
Enjoy your time here and learn the use a straight if you dont already. It's just Sharpening, right?

I take it your doing the whole thing using just elbow grease alone. I saw a lot of sanding blocks and files in the background. Its encouraging to see some one hell bent on making a razor with as little gear as possible. Its nice that your having fun trying to make something. I'm sure you will learn much as you keep trying. I am no razor maker but that frown on the edge has to come out. should be parallel to the spine and I believe the blade width should be about four times the spine width more or less. Hope the steel your using is carbon. Hope the guys that really know the craft will give you some advice. Enjoy and good luck.

Welcome to the forum. I can't offer much advice on the razor making front, it is something that I would love to get into at some point.
I have bought some vintage razors that need restoring and I figured that would be a good place to start. I think it will help me with things like polishing techniques and it will give me a better understanding of blade geometry. These things are dirt cheap too so I figure it doesn't matter if I go wrong. It will all add to my experience.
Good luck and keep it up. There are some truly skilled people on here, many of them have videos on YouTube go there and search for Gssixgun, that guy really knows how to put an edge on a razor, and of course Lynn Abrams has a bunch of stuff too he is kind of the founding father of this forum. You won't go far wrong watching their videos.Fact: Opinions are not the same as facts... Well, that's my opinion anyway
