Thanked: 0Intro
Hello all, been using a safety razor for 15 years and have decided to change over to straight. Looks like I would have better Mano Uber ability and reach better angles on my beard this way. Looking for recommendations on blade. Quite a few sites have suggested Dovo but wanted some o get input from some folks here. Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Joe

Thanked: 634If you are going new I would suggest Ralf Aust or Dove in 5/8 or 6/8. No need to go for the top models. Entry level will do and save money. You will need a strip, brush soap and bowl.
I suggest Straight Razor Design as their razors come shave ready. They also carry strops and such.
Van De Hagen is sold in CVS and Walgreens one make a starter set (soap, bowl and brush)
Good luck and welcome.

Hello and welcome to SRP!
Deciding on a brand of straight razor is a matter of personal preference.
The one thing that you must do, no matter what brand you buy or where you buy it , is to make absolutely certain that the razor was professionally honed and is shave ready. That is one of the advantages of buying from Straight Razor Designs is that every razor that they sell is honed by our founder Lynn.
As far as the grind, what worked best for me when I was starting out was half hollow. The blade is a little heavier. The little bit of extra weight helps with moving the blade through the whiskers and gives a little smoother feel.
Enjoy your time here on the forum and have fun!

Thanked: 0Thank you. I was looking at getting the Dovo Best quality black 5/8 straight razor from SRD. Is this a 1/2 hallow? Did not specify on the website.

Welcome to SRP there's a lot of great folks here
The library is full of useful information too
I'd suggest Straight Razor Design as well. But there are many choices here in the Buy/Sell/Trade area as well when it comes to razors and they are shave ready.
SRD has great quality products for your strop, soaps and brush as well
Enjoy and have funLook sharp and smell nice for the ladies.~~~Benz

Thanked: 634There is a Dovo 5/8 PEARLEX on eBay for $70 / free shipping. Not shave ready. It's about $140 new. The basic Dovo should be around $100 shave ready from SRD.

Welcome to the forum. IMO there's a couple ways to go. SRD is a great choice and not trying to take away from them but you can also get a good deal on a vintage blade in the Buy sell trade section. You will be just fine with the dovo and as mentioned its all personal as to what you purchase. I say get something that appeals to you and as long as its quality and shave ready you are set.
SRD strops are affordable and great.
Check out the library and beginner section lots of valuable info and always ask questions when you have them.Nothing is fool proof, to a sufficiently talented fool...
