Thanked: 0Checking In.
Hello All.
Great site, thanks for the information and advice. I've been thinking of straight razor shaving for a little while and this is the first site I came across with information on it, after looking at a few razors on line.
As a Yorkshireman I thought it would be apt to get a Sheffield steel, and at an antique shop I found a Bengall for $20. Now of course, having read the info here I daren't use it. Need to figure out how to make it shave ready, guessing its not.
Rather than trawl the web, can anyone point me to resources on how to hone and strop - yes I'm lazy.

Welcome to SRP! You will definitely need a blade that's shave ready before you start learning how to hone one yourself. Best to meet up with a mentor if possible to get you started properly, too.
Plenty of information here in the Library. Look on YouTube for Gssixgun's videos on honing, etc. Good luck and ask any questions that come to mind.Last edited by Speedster; 06-04-2017 at 01:06 AM. Reason: Wrong location presumed...<snip>

You might be better served to learn lathering, shaving, and stropping first. Adding honing to the equation may well be frustrating.

Hello and welcome to SRP.
Take a look on the main page of the site in the left Helpful Links column and click on Local Help.
You'll find that there are a few guys in California with experience that are willing to meet up. Hopefully one will be close enough for you to meet with.
Enjoy your time here on the forum and have fun.

Welcome to SRP!! Definitely +1 on holding off on Honing for a bit... Get Lathering, Face-Prep and Stropping down first. Doing so will save you a lot of frustration. And, I'd get a Troubled Razor to practice honing on as you've never felt true pain until you trash a razor you really like(d) while learning to hone.
You can put your Location in your Bio off to the top left and you can search membership help/mentorship by location here:

If you watch YouTube, check out "So Sharp David"... He is in CA and can likely help with local recommendations as well.
