Thanked: 0Hello from MA
Just wanted to introduce myself.
I am a long time DE shaver (Merkur Long Handle, saville row 26mm brush and feather blades are so far my favorite)
Just took the leap into straight razor shaving. bought a beginners kit from straightrazors.com it came with a "shave ready" gold dollar razor, small strop, synthetic brush and a puck of blades grimm soap.
Just attempted my first shave and I guess my idea of "shave ready" and straightrazors.com is a bit different. lol I only made a WTG pass on each cheek. I will keep stropping and keep trying.
I am thinking of ordering a sight unseen razor from whipped dog so if I totally ruin the edge on this one I can have a back up.
Again just wanted to say hi and introduce myself before a begin the onslaught of noob questions
Have a Good Night
Jon

Hey Jon! great to see you here. Gold Dollars are what I started with, and to be honest... I'm surprised I ever kept up with straight razor shaving after that.
There are a ton of great vintage blades here on the b/s/t forum that will out-perform a GD (I know from experience).
Just food for thought...
I can tell you from experience that a straight razor shave should be the best shave you can accomplish after just two passes. If you find yourself giving up on the GD you have, shoot me a PM. as a relatively new wet shaver I may be able to lead you in the right direction. Otherwise, the folks here have a wealth of knowledge that is awesome to tap into.
enjoy the ride!

Thanked: 634Welcome. Sorry your first experience was not a good one. Check the library and ask questions. Go slow. It takes time to get used to it. Like said lots of good razors on the site under B-S-T.

Hey Jonny nice to meet you, I'm in Western Ma.(Berkshire County), you should put your location in your profile so you could possibly meet up with a mentor. I was able to meet up with someone from Springfield. Helped me learn a lot first hand which helped immensely. When I first started I was trashing my edges with my stropping, still do once in a while if I get cocky, lol. But I would check out a lot of stropping videos and practice your technique and timing the flip right. Stropping will quickly improve a flagging edge, and will just as quickly trash a keen one. Hello Jon and welcome to SRP.
I'm from Oakham, Ma. which is about 25 miles west of Worcester.
If I can help in any way I'd be more than happy to. Feel free to P.M. me about anything.

Welcome to the forum, Jonny! I recommend you avoid "sight unseen" razors and find one you like at a similar price here on the Buy/Sell/Trade section. It will no doubt be shave ready and something you've chosen (size, grind, maker, etc.).
Go easy with stropping as poor technique is the surest way to foul an edge. I just touched up a razor last week only to roll the edge while stropping too quickly. I've finally decided to control my speed and take my time stropping from now on.
Have fun and be sure to ask any questions that come to mind.--Mark
