Howdy, and welcome to the Forum. I would suggest a one on one with a Forum Mentor. Go to the Library, search for "Additional Resources" and find "Local Help" in the menu.
It's a list of Mentors and other members willing to help in your area. A visit with a Mentor will save you a lot of time, money and frustration.Freddie

Welcome.
I too came from DE shaving. As to keeping the edge on a straight I think the word keeping is the key. Get someone else to put the edge there in the first place. In other words buy shave ready. Maintaining the edge is easier than putting one there and gives you a grounding should you want to delve deeper into honing in the future.
