    Default Hello from Texas

3 year DE shaver here. Favorite vintage razors are Gillette English razors. Favorite modern razors are Timeless, Muhle Roccas, and Fatip/schone.

Got the prep down and a good collection of brushes and software.

Very curious about the straights and my ability to keep one sharp.

I'd be interested in setting up for straights through trading DEs, soaps, smoking pipes, or wood carving tools. All of which, I've over collected.

Welcome to SRP. You will find a lot of help and good info here. Check the library and ask questions, there is always someone here that knows where to find answers. If they aren't here now, wait a little while and they will be by.

Welcome. Make sure you get a good leather and linen Strop. Make sure your razors are professionally honed. Don't try it yourself. Start with good equipment, and take it slow. You will do great.

Not sure how many folks here would be wanting to pick-up a DE on trade for a straight but you never know. Welcome to the site. Be sure to read the info in the library for beginners and remember that this is not the same as a DE. Lot less angle but still no pressure. Ask anything and we all will be willing to help. A bunch of good guys here with a lot of know how.

To start with, get two razors, Professionally honed, a leather and cloth strop and do some reading and watching of vids. Its said it takes 100 shaves before you get a good grasp on SR shaving, then after your 2nd 100 shaves you will find that NOW you got a good handle on it. It takes time so go slow, enjoy the trip and when you get it down pat, you will never go back!
    It's just Sharpening, right?

    Aloha!

There is a bit of interest on this Forum with pipe smokers, and they have a few threads that they post in, so you never know. If you have a good pipe to trade, someone may indeed be interested.

I've been straight razor shaving for decades, and just last month finally got into honing. Like straight razor shaving, honing is not something you can pick up in a few days or weeks or even months. It takes time and practice. I spent two weeks just watching all the videos on Youtube and reading all of the articles in the library before I put blade to stone. So I agree with previous posters, you would want to have your first razor professionally honed by someone skilled in the art, because it is indeed an art. This way you are starting with a truly shave ready razor and that lowers the learning curve considerably compared to a poorly honed or dull razor. But don't let that scare you off. Honing can be fun (at least I find it fun and challenging) so it may be something you would want to get into after you get some skill with a straight. One step at a time.

    Enjoy!
