Thanked: 0Hello from Wellington, New Zealand
Hi all,
My name is Zoran, originally from Yugoslavia, been in New Zealand for 10 years now. I've decided to buy a straight razor a couple of months ago, but haven't made the full switch yet. My plan was/is to make a gradual transition, so I've been using a shaving soap and brush for the past month. Now, I'm probably exibiting a confirmation bias here, but I think I'm already getting a closer shave compared to shaving foam in a can 🙃 I've got the straight razor on the way now, should be delivered in the next couple of days, already got the strop. Once I start using it, I'm sure I'll have a lot of questions, but for now I just wanted to drop in and introduce myself.
Cheers,
Zoran

Aloha Zoran!
Welcome. Sounds like you are off to a great start. I personally jumped into straight razor shaving at 18 years old cold turkey, but I think your plan of gradually transitioning to a Straight is the way to go. Most would agree that a quality shaving soap or cream is superior to a canned foam, so your belief that you are already getting a closer shave (perhaps smoother would be a better word?) is somewhat common.
The Library here is fantastic. Make sure you use it. I've been straight shaving for decades, yet there are guys here that have forgotten more than I know, so the members here are amazing in depth of knowledge.
Enjoy!

Thanked: 3795You probably are right about the improved shave from brush and soap. I switched to them a few decades ago and found a dramatic improvement long before I got around to trying DE and then straight razors.

I can only welcome you and also suggest contacting one of the NZ or Aussi folks to assure that you have a good edge on your new purchase. Many straights are sold as shave ready and that can be a really strong bending of the truth. A sharp blade to begin with will make the learning process a lot easier and faster!

Welcome, as simple as it looks in videos it's amazing how much we get in our own way learning this fine art. But you will get the hang of it just fine. Ask all the questions you need, these guys are the best and very friendly and helpful. Best of luck Zoran.
