Thanked: 0New to Straight Razors
Hi guys,
I'm from Sydney, Australia and I received a straight razor kit for my birthday (after mentioning to my GF that I enjoy the feel from the shave at the barber) Literally gave it a go last night, and while I get a better shave from a safety razor - I'm pretty it's a technique thing (and possibly equipment, it's a Wahl branded razor)

You're darn right it's a technique thing I still sometimes get better shaves from a safety and I've been at this for 7 years.
Eventually it all comes together and you start getting good shaves - and enjoying the accomplishment. Watch some of the shave videos available on Youtube and see what is involved. Better still, check out our own mine of information at Shave Library
As regards the razor itself, it could be good or not so good. I'd recommend you get in touch with one of the Sydney guys who frequent this forum and get some authoritative advice. There's a bloke called Oz who goes by the stage name of Onimaru55. He's forgotten more about straights that most of us know - check out his posts and give him a PM.
All the best and welcome to SRP

Thanked: 4828Welcome. There is quite a bit of technique involved in both the shave and the maintenance of a straight razor. Is your razor a true straight razor or a disposable blade straight razor. They each have their advantages and disadvantages. I hope you stick with it and get it all dialled in.

Thanked: 0It's an actual straight edge, but not convinced of the quality. If it's not great, it'll serve as a great way to learn the basics of honing and setting an edge.

Thanked: 4828Part of the issue may not be the straight but the honing. If you can send it to someone or meet with them to have your edge checked and hand honed that would tell you a lot.

Welcome to the Forum, there's a lot of people here that will help guide you to great shave with a straight razor, just ask. Give it some time and take it slow and the pieces will start to come together.
