Hello from overseas and welcome on the forum. The first SR shaving can be tricky, so my advice would be do it saturday (evening) to let the skin rest more for the usual shaving on monday morning

The more you shave with a straight the sooner you will get good results. Once a weeks is going to take you a couple years to get good at it. So, if at all possible, and when you have the time to not hurry, use the straight. Welcome to SRP and good luck on this new experiance.

Thanked: 0I definitely understand that if I only shave once a week that it will take forever to get good at straight razor shaving. Maybe once I am able to shave without irritation or cuts I will use it Saturday and Sunday. Then once I am able to consistently get an acceptable shave for work I can get up earlier if needed to get a good straight razor shave in. Do you think this would be a good route to take?

Whatever works for you personnaly is what maters. Some folks take to it easy, other have a tough time getting it right and having a comfortable shave on a regular basis. I shave at night before bed and drive a truck, so im not having to impress anyone but myself. When you have to work under different sercumstances it makes a difference.
So just do what you can, use the straight as often as you can. It takes time to learn to do it right and the last thing you should do is shave in a hurry. Now after you have been at it for a year or so, and you want to be in a hurry and use a straight, then its your ability that will tell you if your alright.
Take your time and do what feels right. Remember that your putting one of the sharpest things in the world against you face and neck. No screwing around! HaIt's just Sharpening, right?

Hi and welcome aboard. Another option as you get better is first pass with a straight then finishing up with the de. This gets you far more practice and helps keep the time down. Juat add extra passes with a straight as you get better. Good luck
My wife calls me......... Can you just use Ed

Thanked: 25Watch the Lynn Abrams YouTube Videos. He shows you how to Strop, how to lather your face, how to shave with a straight and how to hone. But don’t worry about honing yet. Just learn to properly strop and you can maintain the edge a long time.
