    Hello and welcome to SRP.

One piece of advice...Take your Time!

Take your time shaving and buying.
Do a lot of homework before you pull the trigger on anything.
Watch all the shaving videos that you can stand and practice your technique.
Ask plenty of questions here. You will always be guided in the right direction.

Enjoy your time here on the forum and have fun!

Welcome to SRP! Here's hoping you jump into the straight razor mode sooner rather than later.

As for soap/cream recommendations, lots of wet shavers love Baume.be shave cream. It's a stellar performer for the price. Listed in Obie's Tier 1 here:

Be patient and enjoy shaving for a change.

Thank you all for the great advice. I definitely noticed from that my third shave today was better than the first two. A couple of observations:

    1. I know it has been said many times but stretching your skin is important.
    2. Taking shorter strokes and not rushing as many of you have mentioned definitely helps.
    3. I wish I was a bit more ambidextrous. Being right-handed, it is difficult for me to shave under the left side of my jaw bone.
    4. Locking your legs while standing and shaving is not good, haha.
    5. This is going to take some time and patience to become proficient.
    6. My Cremo shaving cream keeps drying out.

Thanks again for the help and I am determined to get better.

    Welcome knorthr.

My one time use of Cremo did not impress me, though I think that adding water with a brush would improve it a lot. Straights like a wetter lather.

Your Cremo is probably drying out because of the long time it is taking you to shave right now. In time it will only take you a few minutes per pass, but until then you want to try just lathering up half of your face at a time.

Yes, locking your legs while shave is bad.
And sweat trickling down your nose is distracting.

Good point, I am pretty darn slow so I'll try lathering up less of my face.

    Welcome from Canada.

I too would recommend getting a real straight, but I have never used a shavette, so what do I know? As for blade, many of the online vendors offer sample packs that let you try out several different brands before you land on one that best matches your skin, face shape and beard.

Have fun, but watch out for the various acquisition disorders that many of us suffer from.
