    Default Hello from NC

I've been interested in shaving with a straight razor for quite some time. I wasn't quite ready to make the jump to purchasing a strop, honing stones, straight razor, etc and decided to go with a shavette. I ended up purchasing an Equinox with Derby premium blades which is in the link below. I'm using Cremo shaving creme and it seems decent but am open to other recommendations. After only completing two shaves, the first was quite nerve racking but it didn't end bad. The second shave was much better and I only nicked myself once. I enjoy the process and once I'm no longer a broke college student I'll definitely be investing in a more proper setup. I'm open to any and all advice and think this site is a great resource.

Welcome to the forum! Congrats on beginning your journey! You walk taller when you shave this way .

Once you know what you are doing, make sure to try some different blades in that thing. It could make a difference. All said and done, if you can shave with a shavette, you can shave with a straight. You're going to love it!

Welcome to the group. Don't have any shavette experience here. But, when your budget allows buying a good blade from the BST here or somewhere like Gemstar customs is an inexpensive way to get going. Quality blades for 30 bucks are easily found. Enjoy your shaves life is too short to not have a good time with it.

    Welcome to SRP.
Keep your eye on the b.s.t. thread as you can pick up a user grade razor for a low cost. Then all that 8s needed is a strop. You can get a strop for a low cost too. No need to spend big money when getting started. Dont worry about hones. Two razors and a strop is what you need to learn the S.R. and send your razors out for honing. Its best when learning to have pro honed razors.

Lots of soaps on the market. Oleo has some quality stuff and if your going low cost you cant beat arko. There is a thread on this site about first tier soaps and creams. Read a bit of it and you will learn alot obout soaps.

Good luck on this new, old way of shaving. Ask questions and we will be happy to help.

Yeah, I noticed there seem to be some great deals in the BST section and quite a few seem to be shave ready which would be nice.

Hello and welcome on the forum.
To start with SR shaving, you need:
A SR shave-ready, available in the B/S/T section for low cost
    A paddle or a strop
A shaving brush and a soap or cream
NO honing stone, no abrasive paste, nothing else as a matter of fact.

    Welcome to SRP!
Glad you made it through your first shave, it is quite nerve racking. Thirty shaves from now you won't think about being nervous anymore and your shaves will get better.

I'm not familiar with the equinox, but hopefully somebody else can respond about the blades. Different blades work better or worse for different people. So it is a good idea to get a sampler pack and try multiple manufacturers to figure out which blade(s) work best for you.

For a better soap, well there are lots of them out there. $15 may seem like a lot to pay for a shave soap, but it will probably last you a year. Van der Hagan (VDH) has a cheap starter kit with soap, bowl, and brush for around $20 and is available at Walgreens, CVS, Walmart. The soap is actually pretty good. You can also get sampler packs of soaps from various shave stores on line. It's a cheap way to learn which soaps you might like.
