Default Is there any room for a clean shaven Firefighter?

    Hi,

My name is Al and I am very new to str8t shaving. I am taking it up for several reasons. I can still remember my Grandfather lathering up and going to town on his chin with this "archaic" looking blade and thinking that I wanted to be like him. Well... here I am, and here I go. I havent purchased any gear yet after reading all of the newbie guides. Thanks to whoever took the time to write those, by the way. I was thinking about RupRazor's Filly deal, however I am open to other sugestions and or offers from anyone looking to sell some of their stock. As a Firefighter I dont make much money so I am always on a limited budget. Thats not why I do the job though. I do however subscibe to "you get what you pay for". I look forward to some good conversations and like minded people. Thanks

    Al.

    Welcome to SRP!

The Filly set from RupRazor is a great starter kit, and should serve you well! Well done for doing the homework, that will make things much easier when you start shaving!

Good luck and let us know how you get on!

    Welcome to SRP!

There are quite a few members from NC here on the forum. Take a look at the membership map under the "community" tab at the top of the page. Maybe there is someone nearby that would be able to help you get started.

There is also a really good get together held in Asheville (hosted by Doc) that is a great time. If you can do it, it's well worth the effort to go there. Tables full of razors, hones etc along with honing, stropping and shaving demos, what's not to like?

We've got plenty of room for you here!

Looks like you're doing your homework (thanks for that BTW)... the knowledge from the wiki will save you lots of time, money, blood etc.
I'm in Charlotte, If I can help you at all send me a PM (i'm pretty busy right now, but I'd let you try out some of my vintage blades if it worked out)

    Cheers and welcome
    Dave

Welcome to SRP! If you've read the beginner's guides you're WAY ahead of a lot of newbies, thanks for doing that!

The the Filly and etc are well spoken of on the forum, although I haven't purchased them myself, and so I think it is a very good option for a tight budget. The other option being to find a blade you really like (make sure it is shave-ready) that is within your means in the Classifieds here and then just buy a strop from RupRazor.

And, of course, we're all eager to answer any questions you might have!

Default Is There Any Room . . .

    My dear Al,

A firefighter is not only a hero, he can also be a gentleman straight razor shaver.

It takes minimal expense to start your straight razor experience: a good but inexpensive straight razor, a reasonably priced strop, a boar brush and a puck of quality soap — and the heart of an artist and a craftsman.

I feel you have all the qualifications, so welcome to the world of gentlemen straight razor shavers.

    Regards,

    Obie
