Hello from Michigan
Just wanted to say Hi.
I just registered here. And want to learn more about shaving with a straight razor.
I found this site about two weeks ago and have been reading up on the info for beginners. It has all been helpful and I particularly liked the Zen Of Straight Shaving by Sensei Kyle.

Welcome to SRP!
If you want to learn about shaving with a straight razor this is the best place to do it. There are a few members in Michigan and I think that they may be planning a mini get together to exchange honing and shaving info. Take a look here, especially the second thread.

Thanked: 1371Welcome to SRP!
Good job on reading up on things right away. Don't be afraid to ask if you need help with anything.
Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.

straight shaving
Thanks for saying Hi Guys.
Right now I'm just saving up to get a good starter set on a Dovo or a good vintage razor. If I get a vintage I'm sure I'll have some questions to be sure I'm getting something good.
I currently use a brush and some shaving cream from the body shop with a disposable. I have never been impressed with the shave from a disposable.
I'm also looking at making a badger hare brush and turning the handle on my lathe I found a place to by the badger hare heads. ( My current brush is a cheep synthetic )
Oh Detroyt I'm in Grand Rapids and have family near Detroit

First Straight Razor
Well I bought my first straight razor yesterday at an antique store for $7.00
I tried shaving with it and it was the single worst experience of my life
BAR NONE.
Just kidding I didn't try shaving with it. And I'm not sure if it will ever be shave worthy, But for the price of a fast food lunch or a star bucks coffee I figured it would be a good piece to learn restoration on.
But before I start grinding away it's either a Wester Bros "Anchor Brand" 4/8 or a Wester Bros "Manganese Steel" 11/16 I'm confused because it has similarities to both of these that I found in the database.
here are some pics
In the first and last pics you can see there is some damage to the cutting edge of the blade and also pitting I would love to try to restore it but I'm not sure of the value of this razor, I'd hate to mess up something an experienced restorer could fix if it's actually a valuable piece.
So i,m looking for some advice on wether I should attempt a restore on my own or not.Last edited by gandrw; 03-26-2010 at 09:57 PM.
